Fight Mosquitos With These Plants In Your Garden

Planting certain types of pest-controlling herbs and flowers is a tried and true solution for the eternal question of how to keep mosquitoes away. As a bonus, plants that smell terrible to mosquitoes smell great to humans, so your patio will be enhanced by both a lack of mosquitoes and the sweet scent of flowers. These are the best mosquito-repelling plants for a swat-free summer (and spring and fall too).

Get Rid Of Weeds…Between Bricks

Hand weeding also works, without any of the worries about poisoning people, pets or soil, or affecting the climate by burning fossil fuel. It’s fairly easy to pluck out young weeds, roots and all, especially soon after a rainstorm. The hook end of a painter’s 5-in-1 tool can be very helpful in narrow gaps between bricks. But it’s nearly impossible to completely pull big weeds with thick taproots, such as mature dandelions, or established clumps of a runner-forming weed, such as Bermuda grass.

Manage Landscapes In March

March is a good time to get your Lily Turf, also known as Liriope muscari, which is the clumping kind, ready to show its spring and summer beauty.  In my opinion the most desirable variety is named “Big Blue.”  It grows in clumps. The Monroe White variety is usually more difficult to find but is very attractive.

Getting Your Garden Ready For Spring

Photo by ArtHouse Studio on Pexels.com

t’s… not spring time. Not by a long shot, even here in the Midwest where winter doesn’t last that long. Still, even though spring isn’t yet in our reach, any gardener will tell you that as soon as the holidays end, our thoughts turn to one thing only: the garden. It’s a bit early to think in terms of planting; some of us can’t even see our garden plots for all the snow on top. But there are things we can do to satisfy that gardening itch, in the bleak midwinter. The busier you stay, the sooner spring will get here.

How To Grow…

Tomatoes inside your home!

Outdoor space isn’t the only reason why some people can’t grow tomatoes outside. “In Britain, many people choose to grow their tomatoes in greenhouses, polytunnels, or inside the house because it’s warmer and protects the plants from getting blight, a fungal disease,” explains Tanya Anderson, author of A Woman’s Garden and founder of Lovely Greens. This is also true for many people who live in colder climates with short summers.
